Pope Benedict’s Latest Encyclical

Pope Benedict XVI’s new encyclical on the theological virtue of hope, Spe Salvi, was just released by the Vatican today. Click here for the official English translation.

I’m sure all of you, like me, are more interested right now in reading the encyclical itself than my commentary. Next week after we’ve had a chance to read and reflect on the Pope’s words there will be plenty of time for that.

I do recommend, before reading the encyclical, that we pray the Act of Hope. May the Pope’s teaching inspire us to grow in the virtue of hope, which helps us keep our eyes fixed on the prize–the “future, difficult good” of life in heaven.

The version in Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is a little different. Here’s the version my family prays:

O my God, trusting in Your infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Your grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
